The AppalSEED Academy selection committee consisting of Appalachian State University faculty and staff, local public school science teachers, and home school association representatives will evaluate the applicants. Award recipients will be selected based on the letter of recommendation, essay, academic potential, and their demonstrated interest and commitment to completing the program. For more details (application forms and instructions) contact your science teacher at your institution; your local Home school Association.

For an application Hickory High School 9th grade students should see Angela Hattman and homeschoolers should contact James Wilkes or Bridget Tuberty, the AppalSEED program Coordinator. Watauga High School 9th grade students students should see their science teacher for an application. There are no online applications, you may only obtain an application through one of the people listed above.

Applications for Spring 2010 will be available in early January and will be due by mid February, exact dates TBA. Interviews will be scheduled once all applications have been received. A total of 20 awards will be given.

Eligibility Requirements

To be considered for the AppalSEED Academy award, you must be from northwest North Carolina and be either from a public school or home school.

Public School Criteria

  • Enrolled full-time in a public school in northwest North Carolina
  • A 9th grader who will be in 10th grade in the 2009-2010 academic year
  • Have potential to excel academically
  • Willing and committed to complete the year-long program

Homeschool Criteria

  • Attending a home school registered with the State of North Carolina
  • At least 13 years old
  • Have potential to excel academically
  • Willing and committed to complete the year-long program
