About
AppalSEED is a year-long after-school science enrichment program for home school and public high school students in Northwestern North Carolina (African American, Hispanic and low-income students are encouraged to apply).
Overview
This program is year-long and is divided into 8 phases, namely: phase I is for recruitment; phase II involves team building skills and sample
collection; phase III is for skills and techniques common across disciplines and transferable; phase IV is for rotations around the 4 different
inter-disciplinary projects; phase V is for mastery and depth of technical skills and concepts of the specific directed research project; phase VI is for
poster presentation and graduation; phase VII and VIII are for capacity building and follow-ups of graduates. Upon graduation, some students
will also be selected to participate in the ongoing Appalachian State University Merck/summer research program.
Research Involvement
Students will participate in inter-disciplinary exploratory science projects from September through April, except on holidays. These activities will be led by a team of four scientists with established and productive research programs in Chemistry, Eco-toxicology, Microscopy and Biomedical Science and are designed to provide students with opportunities that will enhance their appreciation of investigative science that has local relevance and implications.
